About Us

A Family Home In the Heart of Kenya

Welcome to our Mara-Moon guest-house. We are happy to offer you our houses and rooms that are part of a camp, situated only 2 kilometers from the Sekanani entrance to the Masai Mara Game Park. The guesthouse is run by a team of local Masai people and for every night spent we donate money to the local community.

The camp is built up de hills and offers stunning views of the Mara landscape. Your stay will be in a large natural environment where some animals from the park come to sleep at night. We keep the land as open as possible to enable the elephants to use their corridor passing over the hills as they have always done. Please feel welcome to enjoy the tranquility and beautiful starry nights of the Masai Mara.

We are a Kenyan family and have been living in the bush for many generations. We love organizing safari’s and we make our living from building and operating camps in remote areas, all over Africa.

Our Story

The Mara-Moon houses are situated on land that is owned by Ola Baai Masai community, with whom we have been working for more than 30 years. With your stay you support the local community of Masai taking their heritage into the future. A portion of your accommodation fee provides ongoing support for education and healthcare of the Ola Baai Community. You will meet our staff who are from the Community and they like to take you for a walk or help you spot wildlife in the Game park. Please come and join us to truly appreciate the uniqueness of our location and experience the personalized style at Mara-Moon.

The property is situated squarely on a migratory corridor where elephants can cross the hills without climbing and where elephants can give birth to their babies. Part of our intention with the land is to keep the property “fence free”, to enable elephants to use this walkway as they have been doing for thousands of years. It is not uncommon that some elephants, buffalo, giraffe and impala are walking on the property, particularly in the evening.

For the safety of our guests and give them peace of mind, we have built an inconspicuous fence around the 3 acres of the houses and there are Masai watchmen on site 24 hours per day.

At Mara-Moon, we like you to enjoy close to being outdoors as much as possible while still having the comforts of being at home. So please bring your food and drinks, come with family and friends. Our kitchens are fully equipped with refrigerator, stove, BBQ grill and even the baskets to take your lunch. You can enjoy your dinner under the stars of the Milky Way or have a BBQ at sunset. After a good night sleep in a cozy warm bed, you will wake up with a full view of the Mara plain in front of your eyes. You can make your own breakfast and prepare a packed lunch to take into the Masai Mara park.

The Mara-Moon guesthouse is a self-catering place. However, if you would rather just relax and take a break, we can arrange a chef and “full board” for you at additional cost.

I had a wonderful experience at this camp it’s tremendous place for budget visitors to Mara. Good location just outside Sakanani gate. Only disadvantage is you got to be out of the park before 7 pm as the gate is closed. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful.

Route

How to get to Mara Moon?

From Nairobi by road, plan on traveling for about 5 hours depending on traffic. Nairobi to Narok is 150 Kms on good tarmac (asphalt) road, via Rift Valley; from Narok drive 86 Kms towards Sekanani, good sign posting along the way, also tarmac road; 1.5 Kms before Sekanani Gate of Masai Mara game park at Sekanani village, veer to the left at the local gas station, look for the first “Mara-Moon” sign post; drive for 2 Kms on stony bush tracks following some more Mara-Moon signs, the last of  which is the entry to the property on your left; proceed 300 meters up hill to the houses. The last part of the travel is half dirt and gravel and somewhat rough with stones, slow going!
